The Native Woodland Co-Op was formed in September 2020. Our core mission is to work with shareholders to establish new native woodland forests and provide an annual tax free dividend to our shareholders.
Over the centuries, Ireland experienced a near-total destruction of its forests mainly because of human activity and a deterioration of the climate: from an initial forest cover of around 80% to less than 1%. Ireland is the only country in Europe where such complete forest destruction took place (source). We established The Native Woodland Co-Op as we wanted to give Irish residents the opportunity to become co-owners and investors in native woodlands and help restore Ireland’s lost native forests along with co-operating in restoration agriculture to help mitigate climate change.
We are big believers in transparency and democracy. By establishing ourselves as a co-op, our Accounts are subject to audit every year by a third party and our Board is elected by our shareholders.
Unlike a traditional company, every shareholder in the co-op has an equal vote, regardless of the number of shares that you own. This also allows for every shareholder to volunteer on The Board, if they wish, and ensures fairness and transparency within the organisation.
Our Board are all volunteers and are all shareholders within the co-op - this ensures that the interests of The Board and that of shareholders are aligned.
All of this aside, we are here to plant native trees. We are all motivated by the fact that we have an opportunity to do something big. Our long term goal is to plant one million native trees in Ireland, but to do this we are going to need your help!
By becoming a shareholder in The Native Woodland Co-Op, your money will be used to purchase land which will be planted with native trees. We will work with The Forestry Service who provide tax free grant income for 15 years on any new forests we establish. This income is then paid out to shareholders as an annual dividend after costs.
For more information on becoming a shareholder, please click here. Otherwise, learn more about forests and Board below.
In November 2020 we purchased our first woodland and plan to plant 12,700 trees on the site. Pictures of the current site are available below. We will add more pictures once the native trees are planted on the land.
The board consists of 7 special members. We are all shareholders in the coop and serve on the board as volunteers.
